The pulvinar regulates information transmission between cortical areas based on attention demands.

چکیده
Selective attention mechanisms route behaviorally relevant information through large-scale cortical networks. Although evidence suggests that populations of cortical neurons synchronize their activity to preferentially transmit information about attentional priorities, it is unclear how cortical synchrony across a network is accomplished. Based on its anatomical connectivity with the cortex, we hypothesized that the pulvinar, a thalamic nucleus, regulates cortical synchrony. We mapped pulvino-cortical networks within the visual system, using diffusion tensor imaging, and simultaneously recorded spikes and field potentials from these interconnected network sites in monkeys performing a visuospatial attention task. The pulvinar synchronized activity between interconnected cortical areas according to attentional allocation, suggesting a critical role for the thalamus not only in attentional selection but more generally in regulating information transmission across the visual cortex.

Top-down control of cortical gamma-band communication via pulvinar induced phase shifts in the alpha rhythm
Selective routing of information between cortical areas is required in order to combine different sources of information according to cognitive demand. Recent experiments have suggested that alpha band activity originating from the pulvinar coordinates this inter-areal cortical communication. Using a computer model we investigated whether top-down induced shifts in the relative alpha phase betw...
متن کاملPositron emission tomographic measurements of pulvinar activity during an attention task.
Positron emission tomographic scans were recorded from human subjects following an object-identification task, one version of which required attentional selection and the other version of which did not. In one experimental session, the attention-demanding displays were presented in the left visual field and the nonattention displays were presented in the right visual field. In a second session,...
متن کاملCognitive and Perceptual Functions of the Visual Thalamus
The thalamus is classically viewed as passively relaying information to the cortex. However, there is growing evidence that the thalamus actively regulates information transmission to the cortex and between cortical areas using a variety of mechanisms, including the modulation of response magnitude, firing mode, and synchrony of neurons according to behavioral demands. We discuss how the visual...
متن کاملPulvinar-Cortex Interactions in Vision and Attention
The ventro-lateral pulvinar is reciprocally connected with the visual areas of the ventral stream that are important for object recognition. To understand the mechanisms of attentive stimulus processing in this pulvinar-cortex loop, we investigated the interactions between the pulvinar, area V4, and IT cortex in a spatial-attention task. Sensory processing and the influence of attention in the ...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal deficits are regionally dissociable in patients with pulvinar lesions.
The pulvinar is an important structure for visual attention function. Spatial and temporal attention was examined in three patients with varying pulvinar lesions. Spatial and temporal deficits were dissociable. The patient with anterior damage showed strong spatial but not temporal attention deficits, while the patient with posterior damage showed clear temporal attention deficits, but much red...
